Supiroban Ointment is indicated for topical treatment of primary and secondary bacterial skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and other susceptible organisms.
Pharmacological class: Topical antibiotic
Contents: Mupirocin; 15g ointment (20mg/g)
Mechanism of action: Mupirocin exerts a bactericidal action against sensitive organisms by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It reversibly and specifically inds to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synethetase.
Indications: For the topical treatment of: impetigo, superficially infected dermatoses, moist lesions etc. caused by sensitive strains of Staph. & Strep. species. For abrasions, minor cuts and wounds, the use of Supiroban may prevent the development of infections by sensitive gram-positive organisms. No cross-resistance has been shown between mupirocin and other commonly used antibiotics.
Contraindications: It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to mupirocin or to other ointments containing polyethylene glycol.
Precautions and warnings: It is not suitable for ophthalmic or intranasal use or use in conjunction with cannulae.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding: Safety not established.
Dosage and administration: A small amount of ointment should be applied to the affected area 2 – 3 times daily for up to 10 days, depending on the response. The area treated may be covered with gauze dressing if desired.
